Join us for the opening of Between Land and Tide, an exhibition by artist Olana Light showcasing a public art project that explores the relationship between the human body, the sea and the natural world.
Through photography, wearable sculpture and film, the exhibition brings together the visual world of the project and documents its journey across Portsmouth. During August and September, five live performances took place in public spaces across the city, including Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Victoria Park, Southsea Beach, Hotwalls Beach and Palmerston Road. The exhibition brings together photographic and film documentation of these performances, alongside sculptural works, offering a closer look at the sea-born female guardians, the monumental starfish sculpture made from natural and sustainable materials, and the live encounters that brought these forms into Portsmouth’s coastal and urban landscapes.
Inspired by the sea, tidal ecosystems and Portsmouth’s coastline, Between Land and Tide explores themes of connection, environmental fragility and our relationship with the ocean. The work invites us to look at our surroundings differently, reflect on the vulnerability of marine environments, and consider our place within the natural world.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to experience the project beyond the live performances, bringing together its sculptural forms, photographic images and moving images in one space, preserving the traces of these encounters between art, people and the coastal environment.
